UnclassifiedEmissions

What This Code Means

MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) ON; Adaptive disabled during active fault; Damaged or melted MAP sensor; Intake backfire (>= 4 events); Intake backfire; Exhaust backfire; Intake backfires (4 or more events); MIL ON; Backfire through the exhaust

Possible Causes

  • Improper fuel-air mixtures
  • Worn ignition components
  • Improper valve lash settings
  • Engine timing issues
  • Bad sensors
  • Fuel system malfunction
  • Ignition system malfunction
  • Electrical system issues
  • Base engine issues
  • Application system issues
  • Incorrectly pinned circuits in the coil harness to engine harness connector or ignition coil to harness connector
  • Unseated harness connections
  • Pushed back, loose, damaged, bent, or spread terminals
  • Wiring damage
  • Water ingress into connectors
  • Debris in terminals or circuits
  • Oil leak, weep, or seep from turbo boots onto ignition harness connectors
  • Ignition coils not fully seated or loose
  • Torn or fragmented ignition coil boots
  • Water or coolant around the body of the ignition coil

Suggested Actions

  1. 1Capture ALL fault code history in MASTER and SLAVE ECMs
  2. 2Download ALL fault code flight data recorders from MASTER and SLAVE ECMs
  3. 3Download ALL fault snapshot from MASTER and SLAVE ECMs
  4. 4Download Backfire Histogram from MASTER and SLAVE ECMs
  5. 5Inspect spark plugs for water ingress/corrosion from the top side (coil side)
  6. 6Inspect ignition coil wire harness (closely looking at pin conditions)
  7. 7Perform On-Board (OBD) System Check
  8. 8Download and save all fault snapshots and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data
  9. 9Inspect fuel system, ignition system, electrical, base engine, and application system for obvious issues
  10. 10Inspect the ignition coil wire harness connections and terminals for damage, correct pinning, water ingress, and debris
  11. 11Inspect turbo boots for signs of oil leaks, weep, or seep onto ignition harness connectors
  12. 12Remove and inspect each ignition coil for proper seating, damaged boots, presence of water or coolant, and presence of dielectric grease
  13. 13Capture ALL fault code history in MASTER and SLAVE ECM’s
  14. 14Download ALL fault code flight data recorders from MASTER and SLAVE ECM’s
  15. 15Download ALL fault snapshot from MASTER and SLAVE ECM’s
  16. 16Download Backfire Histogram from MASTER and SLAVE ECM’s (located on Service page)
  17. 17Verify Spark Plug Resistance Value is between 3.5 to 7 kOhm
  18. 18Verify Crank Position Sensor gap and shim as needed
  19. 19Document backfire event details including date, time, engine hours, and operating conditions (engine starting, load step, etc.)
  20. 20Determine if backfire occurred on the master or slave side of the engine
