DTC 531

UnclassifiedGeneral

What This Code Means

External 5V Reference Lower Than Expected; DST displays DTC 531; Intermittent problem

Possible Causes

  • •5 Volt supply out of specification
  • •5 Volt supply overloaded
  • •5 Volt supply shorted
  • •5V reference voltage lower than 4.6 volts
  • •Faulty ECM
  • •Short to engine ground on ECM 5 volt reference circuit (LT GRN/R pin 50)
  • •Shorted 5 volt reference supply wire leads
  • •Shorted sensor (IAT, ECT/CHT, TMAP, FPP, TPS 1, TPS 2, Crankshaft Sensor, or Camshaft Sensor)

Suggested Actions

  1. 1Connect Diagnostic Scan Tool (DST) in System Fault Mode to verify DTC 531
  2. 2Inspect 5 volt reference supply wire leads for shorts before replacing the sensor
  3. 3Key OFF, disconnect ECM connector, and use DVOM to check for continuity between ECM 5 volt reference LT GRN/R pin 50 and engine ground
  4. 4Perform the On-Board (OBD) System Check
  5. 5Replace ECM
  6. 6Replace shorted sensor
  7. 7While monitoring DVOM for continuity between ECM 5 volt reference and engine ground, disconnect each sensor one at a time (IAT, ECT/CHT, TMAP, FPP, TPS 1, TPS 2, Crankshaft Sensor, Camshaft Sensor) to isolate the short
