FAIL TO START
UnclassifiedCooling
What This Code Means
Engine does not fire; Engine fails to start after 3 automatic cranking attempts; Oil pressure does not build up after 3 automatic cranking attempts; Control system locks-out
Possible Causes
- •Blown or faulty fuses F1, F2, F3 on alternator side plate
- •Depressed Canopy External Emergency Stop Pushbuttons
- •Engine fails to fire during crank attempts
- •Entrapped air in the fuel filter
- •Faulty wiring to the fuel control solenoid (FCS)
- •Fuel entering engine but engine is not firing
- •Incorrect voltage at the fuel control solenoid (FCS)
- •Lack of oil pressure
- •Low ambient temperature without thermostart aid
- •Low fuel level
- •Multiple failed attempted starts
- •No voltage output from P.C.B. to fuel control solenoid (FCS)
- •Obstructions in fuel lines or fuel filter
- •Unprimed fuel system
- •Unprimed lube oil system
Suggested Actions
- 1Check fuel level.
- 2Check fuel lines and fuel filter for obstructions.
- 3Check fuses F1, F2, F3 on alternator side plate.
- 4Check that Canopy External Emergency Stop Pushbuttons, if fitted, are not depressed (1001 Series).
- 5Check voltage output of P.C.B. to FCS. If signal not present, replace the P.C.B.
- 6Check wiring to the fuel control solenoid (FCS) and the voltage at the FCS.
- 7If ambient temperature is low, ensure thermostart aid is used, if fitted.
- 8If white smoke comes from the exhaust, refer to the Engine Manual for further checks.
- 9Investigate the reason for lack of oil pressure prior to further cranking attempts
- 10Once the fault has been rectified, clear the fault lamp by turning the Control Switch to STOP (for 2001 panel) or by pressing the P.C.B RESET button (for 4001 and 4001E panels).
- 11Once white smoke/unburned fuel has disappeared and the starting issue is rectified, replace the plugs and repeat the cranking procedure
- 12Press the P.C.B RESET button to reset protection circuits (for 4001 and 4001E panels)
- 13Prime the fuel system using the hand priming pump and bleed entrapped air from the fuel filter
- 14Refer to the troubleshooting guide in Section 9 or the Engine Manual to determine the cause of failure to start
- 15Refer to the troubleshooting guide or Engine Manual to determine the cause of failure to start
- 16Reset the control panel by turning the Control Switch to 'STOP' (for 2001 panel) or by pressing the P.C.B RESET button (for 4001 and 4001E panels)
- 17Turn the Control Switch to 'STOP' to reset protection circuits (for 2001 panel)
- 18Unscrew the plugs on the exhaust outlet elbows or stub pipes and allow the unburned fuel to dissipate
